The Button Factory - 31st March 2009

I know this goes without saying, but firstly Id have to thank Trev and Smog of Gigsmart Ireland for Putting together another great nights entertainment in conjunction with The STC, The Button Factory and of course all of the acts who played as well

I know an awful lot of work goes into putting the gigs together, and all of the people who do the work behind the scenes do deserve a pat on the back, and a metaphorical beer on me for all of their hard work and dedication in promoting the music scene in Dublin on a Grass Roots Level, which is what these nights are about, giving bands a chance to perform in the fantastic setting that is The Button Factory.

Now, having been asked to review the gig as It was pointed out on the night that I could string sentences together, I suppose I should get started!

MAIN STAGE

EL HOMBRE JOKES

The first act of the evening was a very interesting 4 piece called El Hombre Jokes, another band advertising how diverse these Gigsmart Shows can be, combining amazing vocal harmonies from the lads and blends of all sorts of music genres and styles.

They do seem to be a band who have worked out arrangements of their songs to the finest detail, one of the most dynamic bands I have seen in a long time... To go from full band to just acoustic guitar and back again is always something i enjoy in a band!

I'd like to be able too give examples of who I think they sound like, but they really were quite diverse sounding, elements of Gomez, the John Butler Trio, and even at times I thought Rodrigo & Gabriella esque guitar paying at times, blending little bits of country, jazz, funk and blues thrown in creating one of the most eclectic bands I

have ever seen, needless to say I did enjoy the bands set immensely, the drummer, even though he wasn't as lit up as the rest of the band couldn't help but escape my attention, giving a fantastically animated performance!

I can definitely say I would love to see them perform again. They wouldn't normally be my thing exactly, but the blend of the music they were playing, and the catchy little hooks and melodies I couldn't help but sing and hum along

ROMANOVS GOODBYE

Id like to mention firstly about this band, is that they were last minute replacements for Remove the Oxygen who sadly had to pull out due to sickness, but from the moment this band took to the stage the looked nothing short of prepared!

Their opening track featured dual vocals from Guitarist Derek and Lead Vocalist Rob, both of whom have very strong vocal abilities, an asset which maybe this band should use a bit more?

The band being a 5 piece comprised of 2 guitarists, bass, drums and then Rob on vocals do have a very defined sound, it is most definitely indie at heart, but at times with a heavier edge capturing a more heavier groove at times similar to that of the stoner rock bands like Kyuss and QOTSA, and when they list their influences as bands like Interpol, Joy Division, Bloc Party, Arcade Fire and Queens of The Stone Age it becomes easier to understand their sound, as they do seem to be taking a very broad blend of all of all these bands mixing it up a bit and creating a sound that is genuinely their own.

One thing about the band is that they do have very catchy songs, and they are very entertaining to watch even to the point that if the crowd wont come to the stage, the stage will come to the crowd as shown by the vocalist rob jumping off the stage at the very end and finishing the songs on the venue floor, I can imagine this band whipping up a storm in a smaller packed venue as they do command the stage they perform on.

Watching the band on stage they do exude confidence, as they did perform throughout their whole set, which is surprising as they are a band whom are only in their infancy whom you'd expect to be only finding their feet after forming in late 2008. Maybe they do require a tiny amount of work on guitar sounds and such maybe tighten up the screws a bit, but all the elements of a great band are present, after a few months they already have fantastic songs with strong melodies and hooks, two vocalists with great voices, a great drummer, who which is worth pointing out also played guitar (Ive never seen that before) there was very clever guitar interplay, I mean its all there, all in all they do look like they could be a phenomenal band and I would definitely sight them as ones to watch out for in the future.

ZOMBIE COPS

Admittedly when I heard the name I really had no Idea what this band would have been like!

It was only on the night i was informed that they were the band formerly known as Sedzor, whom having seen and enjoyed in the past I was excited about seeing the reincarnation that is Zombie Cops!

Describing themselves as a "Fierce" Rock quartet from Dublin really is something that they have every right to say as from the moment these guys took to the stage they really did demand attention. I honestly think this was the performance of the night, a fine example of "how to be a band" in my opinion, everything was perfect regarding the musicianship, great and constantly varying guitar sounds, a great drummer and bass player, and similarly enough to Romanovs Goodbye two vocalists who's harmonies were spectacular!

I was wondering what had happened Sedzor, it appears that they had re branded and disappeared into the depths of some rehearsal room perfecting everything possible about their set, the commanded the stage, had fantastic new songs,

I don't think I can offer any criticism about these lads be it constructive or otherwise, as I said earlier, they are a fine example of how to be a band, very clever dynamics, fantastic songs and melodies, they really made me want to pick up a guitar and better myself! Masters of their Craft I must say.

I know they are going to begin recording in the near future, I cant wait to hear more from this band, and I look forward to seeing them again!

SIDE STAGE

Whilst the bands were swapping over between sets on the main stage, all focus was on the new addition to the Gigsmart Gigs which is the Side Stage which really came into its own on the night. Whoever thought of this idea is a genius, as it does keep momentum throughout the night.

JOHN DENBY

Now, Mr Denby is just about Gigsmarts Resident Photographer (and also taking photos this night ; Smog), but tonight we got too see his other talents.
It was a very interesting set I must say, comprised of old blues songs which he said is what he really grew up listening too, and admittedly something I myself have never really been exposed too, oddly enough mainly about trains.

I did enjoy the set tremendously, its really nice to have the differential between live band, then down to the most basic of musical forms, one man, and one guitar, which I thought John did fantastically, occasionally stopping to take a sip out of his pint which is always important!

CIARAN LENEHAN

Ciaran aka Joobs to Gigsmart Regulars took to the stage and gave one of the best performances I have seen yet on the Gigsmart Side Stage, playing a set of his own songs we did get a taste of how fantastic and unique he is.
Playing some oddly names numbers such as "One Trip Left" about a multi-trip bus ticket that was given to him with one journey left on it, and "Dandruff" which oddly enough wasn't about Dandruff at all (Or Head And Shoulders, the solution to dandruff)

I have to say, from watching his performance, I couldn't help but wonder why he wasn't performing on the Main Stage, as he had fantastic songs with humorous musings on every day life, again, I have to say anyone who can command such attention with just an acoustic and a voice always amazes me! It really does show the strength of ones songwriting abilities. Id really like to see another performance from this guy

I had a very enjoyable night, I know there is no pleasing everyone, but with line-ups as diverse and varied as on this night there should be something that everyone would enjoy! Which strikes me as one of the most important aspects of any gig. And it has been said before, Gigsmart is only as strong as the bands that get involved, and tonight was an example of 5 very different performers, put together in a big room to perform! All in all a fantastic evening

Erm..... Whens The Next one

Review -GS/ Button Factory/STC Gig

The Button Factory - Tuesday 27th January 2009

Gigsmart in association with The Button factory and Sound Training Cente

Sean Kavanagh

First of all I would like to start by commending Trev, Smog, the bands, students of STC and the button factory. With a new website, forum and additional new members contributing, there seemed to be a focus of making the night a success and with it an air of regeneration.Minutes after I arrived at the button factory I was asked to review the night's events so in my unprepared state...here we go.

Andrew Brady

It is difficult enough as a solo artist to command a stage as big as the button factory's particularly as Andrew's task was to start the show. From what little I did see, I got the impression that Andrew's material might be better suited to a full band rather than a solo performance however as I arrived towards the end of Andrew's set so not best placed to give a full review.

Harrows

Gigsmart debutantes Harrows were next up and the only information I had about them prior to their set was “GREAT” (Bambi – Matt Lane) & “DOIN THEIR BLEEDIN MOCKS” (Gav – Neon Stars). Quite simply, their set was a treat from start to finish.

The guitars of Kevin Towey and Alan Duggan superbly complemented each other and left sufficient room for the growling bass lines of Daniel Fox and rolling drums of Dara Kiely in the mix.

To top things off, the somewhat familiar Julian Casablanca like vocals of front man Ben Waddell resonated through a quickly converted crowd listening in anticipation.

For me, this was the performance of the night. It is a rare spectacle that such talent and composure on stage is held by those with average age of 17 and from a band less than 9 months in its present guise. This is exactly the type of band that Gigsmart could use within its arsenal

Matt Lane

Returning to a Gigsmart stage is Alternative/Indie trio Matt Lane. This band is interesting in every sense of the word. With decorative balloons and white shades all in tow, Matt Lane begin with a new song of theirs entitled “Do what the kid says”.

With intricate bass lines of Ray Scott encompassing layered alternating lead vocals and harmonies from Stephen Banim (Guitar) & Brian Lanigan (Drums) Matt Lane combine their varied influences to provide a fresh upbeat electro pop sound.

One small observation was that I thought the guitar in parts of certain songs was a little thin which left the bass and drums to do a lot of the work.

However, the band seemed relaxed and comfortable on stage with good on stage banter throughout their performance and despite some minor technical issues came through with an overall enjoyable set.

Neon Stars

As Neon Stars take to the stage, there is confident Rock n Roll swagger about this four piece from West Dublin. Lead singer Gav impatiently paces the button factory stage as the band gets ready to launch their attack.

Anyone more than five feet away from the stage is ordered to the front and the band clearly wants everyone in attendance involved in tonight's proceedings.

Neon Stars launch into their set with great energy and songs such as “Kick in the Face” & “Risk” stand out as particular favourites. This band is undeniably and unashamedly indie.

Their honest approach and love of playing live is abundantly clear. “We are a Gigsmart band we played our first gig with Gigsmart and will probably play our last one too” declares Gav from a sweat soaked stage mid way through the performance.

There is a solid camaraderie evident in this band which suggests an unyielding attitude declaring their music vs. the world. Neon Stars are united in putting on a memorable performance for all to see. And tonight, just that they did.

All and all a very enjoyable evening.

A separate side stage in place was a nice touch as we were treated to acoustic/folk/mystic performance by American songwriter Kalichi between bands performing on the main stage. His reflective set of songs with soothing vocals played with acoustic and accompanying percussion brought a more eclectic aspect to the night's itinerary.

Gigsmart can only be as good as the bands contributing and this is possibly the most indie orientated Gigsmart gig I have witnessed to date (even though in years passed, this would not have been the popular majority).

If indie happens to be your thing well then you would have enjoyed the night. If not...Well then get your own band involved for the next one.

GigSmart / The Button Factory / Sound Training Centre '09
Good to see the bit of interest on the thread http://www.gigsmartireland.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=583
Following a meeting yesterday in the Button Factory we've developed the idea a little more here's whats going to happen.
There will be a series of monthly Gigs - 7 minimum (We'll have a GigSmart presents night....Name to be decided)

Most likely start end of Jan.. they will be mid week but that shouldnt really be a big deal at this stage....most people are "busy" at weekends anyway these days :o

GigSmart & STC Team will manage the promotion - I will coordinate the bands. TBF will agree to give best curfew times and dates available. STC will provide a full crew to support the qualified staff already in place.

All performances will be recorded on a multi-track session within pro tools.
The multi Track sessions will be given to GigSmart and we will reveiw each performance and select a track to mix.
GigSmart will make the multi track sessions available to the bands after we've selected all the tracks from all performances.
The selected tracks from all performances will be compiled on to a "GS LIVE CD"

Following the series of performances a launch night will be organised for the CD. CD's will be replicated and made available for launch night attendees. An online release will be organised.

The line up of the launch night will depend on one thing and one thing only.
An online poll hosted on GigSmart...registered users can vote for the line up.

There are a few other ideas floating about to get other groups and people involved but more on that later when I have details confirmed.

This will be THE PROJECT for GIGSMART in 2009 nothing else. Everyone is invited to get involved at some level or another but understand you will be expected to pull your weight Im not interested in dealing with anyone who wants to tag along for the craic or be on the guest list or whatever. The craic will be on the nights themseleves ;)

I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH - This is a voluntary effort .

The Button Factory will be supporting us and making every effort to accomadate us in any way possible. The cover charge will be as low as possible but will be necessary to cover the staffing (Securty, Bar, Sound and Light Engineer)

The Sound training centre are making resources and facilities available that we otherwise would not have - Many thanks to Oran for that.
I will be spending a significant amount of my own time to coordinate this and get back to the basics of promoting a good night with good bands enthusiastic about pushing it to be the best it can be...seriously NO PRICKING AROUND.

Finally - when the dust clears from all the mayhem there will be a two day recording session in Elektra given to the most deserving band over the series of Gigs.

Once again Id like to pitch this as an opportunity for bands to get their music heard and to prove that you have your act together to make things happen FOR YOURSELF - This is an opportunity to play one of the best venues in the country with a well organised and committed crew. I suspect there will not be too many other opportunities for bands to play the Button Factory in 2009.

Or aim is to create a great night EVERY night we organise a gig. This means whether your playing on the night in question or not that you participate to help make this worth while.

OK so thats about it for now.

NEW BANDS WELCOME / IN FACT VERY MUCH NEEDED.

So the GigSmart gigs are back ....?
So the GigSmart gigs are back ....?

The latest news from GigSmart So whats happening?

So the GigSmart gigs are back ....?

Potentially looking to do about 5-6 decently organised gigs with bands who want towork towards doing something a litter bigger than the "run of the mill" effort. These will be bands who have singles , Ep's albums either complete or in process, the gig should help in the promotion of these for the bands themselves.

Its back to the basics of what made GigSmart gigs good in the first instance.

  • Pulling together and having a great laugh in the process
  • Sharing the responsibility to promote and organise a successful night.
  • Using a bit of common sense (i.e not playing a ton of dates close to or after the GS night)
  • Ensuring a quality backline.
  • Ensuring GOOD STANDARD of band. Fortunately or unfortunately we will be the judge of this by listening to your recorded stuff and / or going to your gigs.
  • Ensuring any rewards of the gig are distributed to those who have made an effort, be these financial or promotional rewards.

Past participation in GigSmart is not essential but understanding that you are working to help promote the other bands you share the stage with is.

Finally and most importantly, this will be run and coordinated through GS and run within GS terms and conditions, i.e those described above, a rather retracted call for bands but past experience neccesitates me spelling it all out. back to the basics of what made GigSmart gigs good in the first instance. Pulling together and having a great laugh in the process
